West Coast Swing is a constantly evolving dance. With its vast musical palette, the possibilities of movement and creation are almost endless. In this series, Benji will teach you that technique is not something that boxes us in, but rather gives the ability to have freedom to lead, follow and to create. The Anthology of WCS is Benji's collection of 25 years worth of learning, teaching, competing and evolving as a west coast swing dancer. You will gain a technical structure and insight that will become your guide and help you in making your dance a work of art.

Benji Schwimmer presents here, on Discs 1 and 2 of a 4-disc set, numerous topics of interest to West Coast Swing dancers – with his “take” on each topic.

He begins where many instructors begin, with “Frame,” “Slot,” etc. and offers what he thinks your frame should be and what the history of “the Slot” is… and so forth.

His “lecture style” is somewhere between “the Oxi-Clean” guy, a preacher, and, the popular guy in High School who just wants to come across, well, as “the popular guy.”

Fortunately, with patience you can learn a good bit from the “Apply” sections that are presented - where the dancers do a decent job of opening your eyes to several “real life” opportunities to “do better” in your dancing. Watch, think, and learn.

Spending a few days with these discs I was reminded of a kid who started dancing at one of our local studios and learned the basics of WCS – and then he started to do all kinds of “weird” things that had the owner of the studio making fun of him. Mildly annoyed, the kid entered some competitions outside the studio and won them - putting egg on the face of the studio owner - who then hired him anyway to teach: “WCS! The Way We Do It!”

You could watch these to pick up what you can about how and why a well-known and successful dancer does what he does. You may or may not agree with what he says or does, but it’s not a bad idea to see what he’s up to, or, thinks he’s up to…
