This DVD is about getting from one swing dance - Balboa, Lindy Hop, Charleston - to another using “common” moves generally found in Balboa, Lindy Hop, and/or Charleston. It’s not a new idea, and it’s not necessarily difficult, but it does take a sound knowledge of the different dances to breeze through the DVD. Otherwise… Oops.
The word “common” means that if you know Balboa then “Come-arounds” are not a problem; if you know Bal-Swing, then Pop Turns and Reverse Turns are no big deal; if you know Lindy Hop, or, plain old six-count and eight-count swing, then side passes aren’t difficult: and, if you know Charleston, then the Sailor Step, and Charleston “kicks,” are “just stuff you know....” The only new part then would be using one of these “moves” to get to a different “dance,” or, two, during the same song.
This isn’t, obviously, a “Beginner disc” but it could be especially helpful to people who know two or more swing dances but haven’t been at it long enough to start connecting all the dots. But, kids, it’s all “Swing Dancing” so you CAN pick your “change up ” dance to fit the music, or, the changes in the music, or, your partner’s skill level, as it suits you.
You’ll probably, as with all Steve and Heidi’s “Jitterbal” discs, have to slow down the playback of the video – hopefully with sound – to actually see what they are doing. Even if you know the moves, and what the idea is, it’s not really helpful to watch the disc if things happen too quickly to grasp the details. Slow it down. Slow is good… Sometimes.
